How do you take the heat sink off a slot 1 processor?

Hi,

I want to move the heatsink from one slot 1 processor to another. But I
can't figure out how to undo the retainers that hold the heatsink to the
processor.

Is there special way to get it to release. Does it just pop off if you pull
on it hard enough? Or are the retainers sacrificial and I should get new
ones?

Any insights would be appreciated.

On a P2-400 I had it used screws, the HS was bolted to the slot-1
cartridge.

AMD slot-A (very similar to slot-1) used a simple lever(s) you'd flip to
lock/unlock.

Nope, no screws. It reminds me of trying to remove a car's interior trim or
dashboard components. You know there are clips, but you don't know how to
release them without breaking them.

Is it on an Intel retail boxed slot 1 CPU, or an OEM slot 1 CPU?

I haven't taken apart a retail one for a while, but IIRC it wasn't terribly
tricky or convoluted. The OEM ones are weird, I literally trashed a CPU
trying to get one apart so that I could swap CPUs between OEM systems that
used different cooling and mounting systems. They do weird stuff to the
heatsinks to fit proprietary case designs.
 
It's an Intel part. I don't know the provenance.

I was able to get the heatsink off, by just pushing hard on the retainers
from behind using some flat head #6 screws. The retainers use a sorted of
serrated pin.

Scary, but it worked.

There is no single answer to your question. Intel used 4 hex-head or
possibly "torx" screws for the processors with factory mounted
heatsinks. However, some OEMs used their own schemes. If you have the
intel solution, look for the screws. They are black, like the heatsink,
and burried at the bottom of the fins, so they may not be easy to see.
Brute force will probably break something.
 
Apart from the torx screws, there are more possible HS/fan options (P2 &
Celeron) On the P2 there is a sliding clip thingy that moves up and the
heatsink can be removed from the posts separating it from the processor. On
the Cels, it's a clip on the reverse side of the PCB which you can push in a
side at a time to separate the heatsink from the CPU (careful not to snap
the printed circuit board in the process).
These are all I've worked with so I hope this helps.

I read about this on a website. Tried it myself, it works.

On Intel retail SECC2 (Pentium 3) processors, there are four holes on the
back that a case screw can just fit through. You first remove the fan
(that's easy), put four case screws on a hard surface, line them up with the
holes, put the CPU on face up, and press down hard. The clips will pop off
intact and you can take the heatsink (and backplate) anywhere you like.
Since the clips are intact you can even reinstall the stock heatsink too.
Nobody will know it was once removed.
