I'm getting unpleasant unwanted adverts on my screen. I
opened Messanger and switched of 'run in background'
and 'run when windows starts', now I have no icon in
tray, but something is switching it on. Please, I don't
want the sort of stuff I am seeing. How do I switch off
messanger completely when I don't want to use it?

You may want to try changing the preferences in Messenger. Open Messenger
and navigate to Tools/Options on the menu bar. On the preferences tab in
the "General" is where you can set the properties. If you are receiving
advertisements you may have spyware or adware installed on your machine.

Are you sure you are getting the advertisements from Messenger and not from
Messenger Service which is a totally different application. If they are
from Messenger Service go to ControlPanel/AdminTools/Services and disable
Messenger Service. Messenger Service was designed to be used by corporate
network managers to broadcast messages to all users but has been heavily
misused by Internet Spammers.

Try doing this..Click start, run, type msconfig under
that tab click startup. Look for messenger and uncheck
it there also..You will have to reboot

The ads that you are getting have nothing to do with Windows or MSN
Messenger.. install a firewall..
