I want to try running a website from my own computer, how do i really go
about this? do i need to have a computer dedicated to it or can i just use
my desktop and run it off one of the hard drives? I also want it to support
FrontPage, ASP, and MS Access Database support, what do i need to know and do?

I know that i have a static IP which is a big deal so i have that covered.

You have to know a lot. Probably more than you might want to spend time learning. Most people leave hosting up to the pros that know about server security, have the equipment, software and staff to maintain the system. Security being the main issue I wouldn't run it off my desktop. Running a windows server gonna be pricey as well.

if it's a personal site you can run it from your own server but with hosting
being so cheap why bother if it's a commercial site.

also you dont need a fixed ip, you can use something like www.no-ip.com

Cheers,
Dean

Then, of course, there must be a dns server for the dns records, and the ISP
must not block port 80.

it is a personal site and a few others i have made for other people. being
that i dont want to have to pay, i would prefer doing it for free and also
those servers that support what i need, they charge more than i like or can
afford to profit on from my few customers

With all due respect, that's one reason you shouldn't consider trying to
host your own sites. There's more to it than meets the eye, Greg.

Here you will find all the information you need to setup and maintain your own webserver at
home or office on your DSL or Cable connection. If you already have DSL or Cable modem, you
already have most of the necessary equipment; all you need to do is set it up.

I dont have a clue what that means

That's the point. I remember the first time I tried to do the same thing you
want to do some 5 years ago, and I knew about as much about running a web
server as you do. The instant I exposed it to the big bad web I was attacked
by someone from Mainland China. They replaced every page on every web site
on my machine with a page that read "F**k USA". And that was 5 years ago,
which is about 100 computer years.

So, you sure you want to go forward with this, GI?

Keep in mind that setting up a server using your cable or dsl
connectioon through your ISP will usually be a violation of the ISP's
TOS (Terms of Service) and will get your service dropped very quickly.

For example, from my ISP's FAQs:

21. Can I run a web server with Adelphia's service?
To offer exceptional service to all our customers, Adelphia does not
permit customers to run servers of any kind. This includes but is not
limited to PPP, FTP, HTTP, DNS, POP, SMTP, NNTP, PROXY, DHCP, IRC,
TELNET, TFTP, SNMP and multi-user interactive forums, and remapping of
ports for the purpose of operating a server on the network.

And from their TOS document:

You agree that You shall not operate a server of any type that provides
services to other users, or for your own use over the Adelphia Broadband
Service. You understand and agree that Adelphia has the right to monitor
the Adelphia Network and, to the extent necessary, your computer system
to ensure that You are not providing any services via your connection.
You understand and agree that Adelphia has the right to take any
measures it deems necessary in its sole discretion to prevent the use of
the Adelphia Broadband Internet Service for uses other than those
prescribed in this Agreement.

2. Generally Prohibited Conduct.
You agree not to use, or allow Users to use, the Adelphia Broadband
Service, the Adelphia Network, the Equipment or the Software:
(g) to run a server of any type in connection with the Adelphia
Broadband Service, or to provide network or host services to others via
the Adelphia Network. Prohibited uses include, without limitation,
running servers for PPP, FTP, HTTP, DNS, POP, SMTP, NNTP, Proxy (any
variety), DHCP, IRC, TELNET, TFTP, SNMP and multi-user interactive
forums, and remapping of ports for the purpose of operating a server on
the Adelphia Network;

....and that's why many ISPs block port 80.
