how do you run scan disk in XP?

I need to run scan disk, my hard drive is making a noise and it keeps hanging
up when I have to reboot. I believe I have a bad sector on my hard drive. I
knew how to do this in 98 but XP doesn't seem to have this function? HELP!!!

No scandisk in XP! The equivalent tool is Chkdsk ( also called Error
Checker ).

It's called check disk (chkdsk) in XP. Open My Computer and right click on
the drive you want to check and go to Properties/Tools and click on the
first one down.

I've found if you go to my computer, then rightclick the hard drive icon,
the go to Properties, you then get the tools such as "scan disk" "disk
defragmenter" and "Backup" (if installed), then run scandisk from there.

Otherwise from start menu, run dialogue, "chkdsk" (no quotes) will do a
disk-check (in DOS mode).

But the ScanDisk exe is not listed in "system utilities" on my start menu -
I'd like to know, what is the *actual* executable called so I can create a
shortcut?

Scandisk does not, nor has it ever, existed in XP or any other NT
architecture OS.

The actual program you are looking for is chkdsk.

It's not that it doesn't have this function, it's that it has a
different name in Windows XP from that used in Windows 9x. It's
called CHKDSK, as it's called in all previous versions of Windows
NT.

Also, if your hard disk is modern, it will have SMART and
you can read the SMART report using EVEREST from
www.lavalys.com

You noise may be from the hard drive or it could be (most
likely) is from the CPU fan.

XP has CHKDSK instead (so as to handle NTFS). Go to All Programs -
Accessories - Command Prompt and in that
CHKDSK /F C:

It will complain twice; say Y each time and it will set up to run it at
next boot.

But I would make sure important data is backed up, and look on the drive
maker's site for their own diagnostic program

MY COMPUTER...C:DRIVE....Right click on PROPERTIES....TOOLS....Check drive for
errors..This will arrange for a scandisk on the next startup. ...Dick M.
