It should work, but first make sure that FNE's are displayed in WE by going
to (in Windows Explorer) Tools>Folder options>View>Advanced and make sure
that the box "hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked.

You're already pointed in the right direction. It works just fine. You'll
get a warning that changing the extension may prevent the file from working
properly, but it's just a warning and you can override it.

Be aware, however, that changing an extension doesn't change the file's
format. A bmp file won't become a jpg file because you change its name.

its because windows by defauilt set to hide known extensions
to change this
open "my computer" go to "tools" > "folder options" tab "view" and
unckeck "hide extentions for known file types" then click ok
you should now see the extentions, rename them willl take effect
hope i did got it right, i am not using windows

Do you mean that if i have an extention that is of video content that has a
..rar extention i cannot change it to an .avi or .mpg extention?

I promise to read all posts, lol thanks

A .rar file is a compressed file. You don't want to change its name; you
need to unrar it to use it (like you would a zipped file). WinRAR can
work with .rar files.

The .avi file will be inside the .rar'd file.
