How do you reinstall a dvd drive

I cannot play dvd's on my XP. I got some suggestions from others but have had no luck. I went to www.dougknox and tried to download something to 'Restore CD/DVD drives to Windows Explorer, but again I couldn't. Please help me and please be as specific as possible

Remove and then reinstall your dvd software. I assume that the dvd player is
mechanically sound. Jym
