I have had multiple troubles with McAfee. The latest was with their recent
download. After downloading their new "format" I lost all of my restore
points. And now I have to click "fix it" everytime I log on to to activate my
windows firewall. Personally, I will not renew my subscription when it
expires.

How do I rate McAfee?

The Enterprise version, if configured correctly and run on a PC with
enough RAM, is fine. Otherwise, it is known to hose up lots of PCs; I
wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole.

Like Byte, I use AVG and am very happy with it.

I did not find "sr" or "srservice" in my event log. I think I folowed your
instructions correctly. You have a very nice site and I have placed it in my
favorites for future trouble shooting. One more thing please: Which free anti
virus software is the best and do they provide firewall
protection.........thank you for your help, sincerely, steve

Avast has what could be considered a lightweight firewall built-in.

<snip>
Network Shield
A new resident protection module was added to avast! 4.5: the Network
Shield. This module provides protection against known Internet
worms/attacks. It analyses all network traffic and scans it for
malicious contents. It can be viewed as a lightweight firewall (or more
precisely, an IDS (Intrusion Detection System)).
<snip>

That along with the Windows SP2 firewall should be enough. If you are
connected to DSL or Cable, then a router is a very good choice on
protecting the system.

these ratings are from 5 years ago...Mcafee is horrible...it disrupts Windows, all programs, and provides virtually no protection at all
