How do you put WINNT 4.0 into safe mode?

I realize this is not the NT newsgroup, but I figured there are a number of
admins here that are familiar with the process.

I thought it was the same "F8" as with W2k, but it does not seem to work and
there is no info on the screen to tell you when to press the key.

Thanks!

There really isn't a "safe mode" for Windows NT. You can boot vga mode (with
/BASEVIDEO /sos appended to boot.ini startup line)

Something like;

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT [VGA mode]" /basevideo
/sos

The problem is that I cannot login to the computer because it belongs to a
domain that is no longer available. I wanted to remove it from the domain
and have it join the existing domain.

Is there any way to do this?

You should be able to logon with cached domain account or from the domain
dropdown choose local computer and use any valid local account.

I don't know what this means. Other than what? User accounts are not
presented at the logon box.

| It doesn't give me any other account to login under.

What I mean is ... the domain does not present em with the ability to select
anything other than the old domain. I cannot login to that because I get an
error saying theat the user name, password, or domain are not correct. I
have no choices.

Then it is/was probably a DC. You're probably looking at flattening it and
rebuilding.

It makes sense except that I am sure I had logged into it from inside the
domain. Even if it was a secondary controller, it won't let me login to the
domain either.

And ... yes I do know the Administrator password. Just so you know.

What are you going to do with it? Recover your data from a parallel install,
then rebuild it.

This is an old machine that I am messing around with from a customer who has
had it idle. I was hoping to be able to use it for some tasks. The customer
did not have the CDs any longer. It was just a hope that I could make some
use of it.

Thanks!
