How do you put individual hard drives to sleep?

Hi,

Just wondering, I have a 2.1gb hard disk that I use mostly for backup of
current projects so the drive isn`t used all the time.

It seems silly to have the thing generating noise, heat and using power all
the time, does anyone know how to send it to sleep mode without affecting
the other drives?

TIA

I pull off the power plug to my unused ones. Fortunatly mine are easy
to get to.

Get another disk controller and hang the drive off of it. Then set up
power management to shut down the drive after certain timeout period.

This used to work for me when I was running my OS off the RAID
controller, and backup drive off the on-board IDE controller.

Trouble was, when you click on My COmputer, windows waits up all the drives.

Another solution is get a removable drive drawer. Check out StarTec.

Hmmm, I don't run IDE drives. I do have 8 SCSIs spinning tho.
Power management in Win2k tells them when to spin down.
When I want something from one of them, just that drive spins back up.
In Windows explorer, I can usually go into a drive that's spun down
and look in a few directories until I get to one that isn't cached,
then it spins up the drive.
Are you saying that Win's Power management won't spin the drive down?
Perhaps you have a page file on there that Winders is accessing when
you're doing stuff so it can't spin down?
