Just sat here trying to decide on how to set up my hard disks for my new build and thought i'd ask...

So my question to you is....

1. How many drives do you have and how big are they?
2. What data is where? Do you use a separate disk/partiton for programs or docs etc?

Just a bit of fun, and i'm curious as to others ideas. :)

I don't have my drives set up as I'd like them as one drive failed and I didn't want to re-arrange things from scratch until I build a new PC in a couple of years.

My current setup is:

640GB primary drive (C) - Contains Windows 7 installation and all applications/games are installed here. The drive is surprisingly fast so isn't as bad as I feared.

250GB secondary drive (D) - Used for swap file and backups of important data.

However, I do have a network drive that I use for music/photo/source file storage so that all PC's can access it. :)

Currently i have

C: 200GB for OS and programs
E: 750GB for music and tv shows i record
H: 750GB for DVD rips
I: 3x500GB in RAID5 for HD content rips

Plus an external 1TB for backups and program installers etc

I must add that i do own all of the DVD's i have on my PC

Have a read of the above article and the comments below it. I don't know if the assumtions are correct as I don't have enough knowledge.
However I always install the OS to the first section of my hdd usually about 60GB and the rest for storage.
Reasoning that if I get a nasty or something it will be quicker to do a replacement with Acronis. 60 GB might not be enough for some folk but it does for my XP gaming as I also have a dual boot with a GNU/Linux for everyday use.You do not need to access films pictures etc every day so they are stored on the slower part of the disc aswell.
I might have this wrong but thats what I do.

Well the reason i asked is im interested. :)

I'm obviously going to put the OS on the SSD, with a few programs (firefox for example)

Then games on another drive them another drive for docs and probs another for backups.

Sounds ok dont it?

Several different setups here but on my main computer (the one in my sig) after installing Win 7 the setup will be:

2 x 150Gb Velicoraptors in RAID 0 totalling around 300Gb space for main drive.
500Gb Samsung SATA II for storage.

And that's it.

I keep installs quite light on this machine, primary use is work, which is very small on space, and gaming, which can get quite large depending amount of games installed. But I think 300Gb as a primary drive for gaming will be ample.

The media machine has a 74Gb Raptor as primary drive with XP on atm and a 1Tb Samsung for storage.

My video/audio machine has loads of disks and I can't remember all the details atm :D

And for all of these I backup to external hard disks in a dock and a caddy, with regular backup of vital data to DVD/CD.

Wouldn't you get the fastest speed for gaming if you put the games and os on the SSD. Ain't that why you bought it.

Abarb, I don't think he'd fit all his games and Win 7 onto a 128Gb disk.

I'm currently running Vista with not all of my games installed and I've used up 260Gb of disk space on C.

The only significant other software programs that may account for used space are full version of MS Office 2003; Photoshop 7 & Nero 8 OEM.

What flops said. :)

I'll probs put cod4 on the ssd but i wont get all games on it no way. Anyway its only the games loding times that will be quicker if it went on the ssd, so not gonna make a massive difference tbh.
