How do you move window icons in the task bar?

OK. Once upon a time back in Win 98 you could re-arrange the minimized window icons in the task bar to your hearts content. Now I find that in XP this is no longer possible or at least I can't figure out how to do it

This really bugs me too because I tend to open programs in a certain order after booting XP so that the left most minimized window represents a certain program. The next most another program. This lets me very quickly select the program I want to run. Normally this works great

However every once in a while the task bar loses it's mind and seems to re-arrange all the minimized windows. At this point I have to shut them all down and re-start them all in the order I want in order to get back to where I was. This can be a real pain in the *ss if am deep in the middle of something and can't easily replicate where I was

So, does anyone know of a way to allow me to re-organize the minimized windows in the order I want? It used to be as simple as left click, hold, drag and drop. That doesn't work, neither does holding down the shift, alt or ctrl keys while attempting to drag and drop

P.S. Please note, I am not complaining about the task bar organizing all IE windows next to one another regardless of when they are launched, I am talking about distinct seperate programs like IE, Outlook, Developer Studio etc etc

This is WRONG! Windows98 could NOT do that without a third party application
called buttonboogie.

This program is however uncompatible with XP.

Incompatible, not uncompatible . . .
Even NOT compatible, but not uncompatible . . .

I do not know of a third party that can do it in xp.

Perhaps I had that piece of S/W installed then. But I know I was able to
do it and often did. In fact I believe I can even do it in X under Linux.
So are you telling me there is no way to control the ordering of the
minimized windows in the task bar?
If so that really sucks because it's annoying as hell to have them
re-arranged all the time. You'd think this would be something that would be
trivial to add and would be a feature people would be interested in.

Right-click on the taskbar - uncheck Lock the Taskbar.

3Dim

Nope. That just lets you re-position or resize the task bar itself. It also lets you add extra options to the task bar to be displayed

It does not let you re-arrange minimized windows inside the task bar

Ti

And putting your icons in the quicklaunch toolbar in the desired order, is
that an idea?

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you mean here.

If your talking about the tiny icons in the far right corner next to the time and date that's not what I meant is the problem

I'm talking about the middle part of the task bar between the <Start> button on the far left and the date/time and other icons on the far right. In that area goes a minimized window icon for every task you launch (for example Internet Explorer or Developer Studio or Outlook). Then by clicking on those you can bring that window to the front on the screen

If this is what you meant then that's awesome and can you elaborate more on how to do it

They appear as they are opened.

What you could try is having them auto-start minimized either by adding them
to Shell- Explorer.exe here: Start/Run/Regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Or number them in your Startup Folder.
