How do you insert text

I would like to type a single word on a slide center it and do the same on
the next one for vocabulary study. Online help is very useful if you want to
create a presentation, but I have not found information on how to complete
this simple task.
 
You could start typing in the text placeholder that appears when you open
powerpoint.

Or you could use the text box tool that appears in the Draw tool bar found
at the bottom of your workspace. It a black & white icon with a small A and
gray lines on it.

To expand a bit one one of Sandy's good suggestions:

Use the text box tool to draw a text box the size of the entire slide.
Type a word into it.

Rightclick it, choose Format Text Box and on the Text Box tab of the formatting
dialog box, choose Middle Centered alignment and remove the check next to
Resize Autoshape to Fit Text.

Click OK.

You may need to resize the text box to fill the slide again, so do that.

The text will now center on the slide; from now on, just choose Insert,
Duplicate slide and type any add'l words you like.

Enter text in a text box (centred text)
In draw > alignment > align to slide
then align middle and align centre

Or probably the most complex keyboard shortcut ever, select the text box and
Alt R,A,S followed by Alt R,A,C,R,A,M!!

Bangs optional.

Interesting (and yeah, I just had to try it) the ! makes the cursor go to an
hourglass for a split-second, where non-active Alt+keys just make the computer
beep. I wonder what I've done by trying this and how the Deus In Machina will
punish me for it.

How so? The shortcut works fine. I was just (did you notice the tug on the one
leg?) questioning the utility of the exclamation points in your:

Alt R,A,C,R,A,M!!
