Hi there,

I joined this forum a while ago and haven't posted very much. Part of the time I've not been around due to being unwell (I have ME) and part of the time I look at the board but I'm too clueless with computers to answer anything!

Anyway, hello again to everyone, it's nice to see you!

To my question (I'm very sorry if this is in the wrong section)...

In our house we have broadband and one computer. I would like my own seperate email account. At the moment we have two computers but email to everyone end up in the same inbox - whichever computer opens Outlook Express receives all the emails for everyone.

What equipment would I need or what would we have to do to change this. Would I have to pay for a second broadband account and if so can I do that on the same phoneline?

I apologise for sounding like such an idiot but that's what I am when it comes to using a computer!

I'd really appreciate any help...

Thanks very much,

Ailsa :)

There are two basic types of email.... to keep it simple....

Downloadable ..... like your doing now....
and Web based (which I encourage).

There are many many places to get free web mail accounts..... my favorite happens to be gmail.... googles online email service. With web based services like gmail, you go to a website, login with your username and password and read your email online.

If you want a gmail account.... just ask here, and I'm sure that someone here can get you an invitation (gmail is by invitation only... ) Googles gmail has a few very nice features... one of which is it scans for executables (nice for those of you that use Windows).

And... for what it's worth..... no question is dumb... except the unasked ones ;) Everyone using a computer has been in your shoes at one time or another... whether they remember it or not ;)

Hi there,

Not totally sure on this, but someone wil be along to put me straight if need be. If you are using XP you could possibly set up multiple profiles (accounts) and manage your OE email that way by setting up the individual pop accounts. Alternatively, have you thought about individual web accounts? I know Gmail lets you store a 1Gb of mail, as does Yahoo. If you would like a Gmail account let me know and I can send you an invite.

Hope that's been of use..

Ian

thanks

Hi Usalung,

thanks very much for the reply and thanks for being so patient over my ignorance:o ! It's a really good idea to use webmail. I've used hotmail but didn't find it that great. Is gmail better?

I suppose I was thinking about whether I could set up another broadband account because we are using a wireless router (think that's the right name) to relay the broadband signal to both computers and the signal to mine isn't that good anyway...but then that's another question really.

Thanks again for your help:thumb:

thanks ukJAG

Hi ukJAG,

I'm not sure about the indivdual pop accounts - I've a feeling that's what we did but they all come to the same inbox. I might be talking rubbish here!

Thanks for offering to help me with the gmail. I'd definitely be interested if it works better than hotmail which I don't really like.

I have problems with looking at the screen (due to ME symptoms) and I prefer having a facility to enlarge text which hotmail doesn't have.

Thanks for your help,

Ailsa :D

Yep, I'll agree with usalug here ... and second the motion to use an "on-line" web-based email address.

Seveal advantages ... no "downloading" spyware, plenty of storage, if your PC fails, just use anybodies PC to go and read your mail from anywhere in the world ... very easy to set-up. :thumb:

As ukJAG, says if using Win XP, you need to mess about with profiles ... and it can get messy ... even I, and I dare say some of the rest of us, get it wrong.

Just ask if you wish to use Gmail and PM myself or one of the other mods (we all have over 100 to give away) with 3 peices of information;
1. Your present email address ... so we know who to send the invite to
2. Two names ... a first name and a second name. these do not have to be your real name

Don't post any personal details in this thread, use the PM system an we will send you an invite.

Hi Ailsa,

If you have separate logins to XP, say you are Ailsa and the other person is Bob, you should be able to setup individual pop accounts as the logins are separate.

Regarding Gmail, I think it's great. You actually get 2Gb and not the 1Gb I stated. Regarding text size, within your browser, if you select View -->Text Size you can increase the size from there.

If you would like a Gmail account PM me your email address and I will send an invite to you.

It's very simple.
In outlook express, click on file, identities, Add new identity. Create a name for the new identity, create account, and you're done.
To switch between identities, click file, switch identity.
