I want to set my computer up to connect to my parents in another state. All
the help i find says to just enter the computer name or IP number to connect
to that computer but there is a big step missing it seems. How do i find out
what the other computer is? This will be the first time connecting

Have them use a *FREE* service like No-IP.com that maps their IP to a Fully
Qualified Domain Name (FQDN). You can then use the FQDN, which is easily
remembered, to call versus the IP address. I use No-IP.com to call my home
PC all the time. Go to http://www.no-ip.com for details.

Otherwise they can go to http://www.whatismyip.com and tell you what the
reported IP is...

Remember that if they are behind a firewall/router they will need to open
TCP Port 3389 for Remote Desktop...

I second that, since this is what I use...

after you sign up, you must download a small program that you can install
on the distant computer so that it will run as a service.
Eatch time that pc goes online the ip will be translated to a domain name
you will have registered for free with no-ip.com

so for example in remote desktop client you will type "
USERNAME.redirectme.net"

and it will connect
