How do you get Defender not to use MS Update?

Short of uninstalling Defender and starting over anyway. Is there a Registry
entry perhaps?

When I installed Beta 2, I made the mistake of opting in for automatic
updates, and it's turned out I don't want them and would rather do it
manually from within Defender (Help/About, of all places).

Thanks

Yes, I mentioned that, but it's unrelated to my problem: MS Update has got
it in its head that it's going to offer me updates every week. I'm trying to
find a way to disable that behavior for good, as if I never asked for it in
the first place.

I don't know how to break it of that habit. If you are being repeatedly
offered the same update, something is broken on your machine. If you are
talking about the normal update process of Windows Defender, I suppose
uninstalling would be the solution.

The only option within the program for updates is whether to seek them via
autoupdate before a scheduled scan. It's possible that there are or will be
Group Policy settings that might change the behavior--but the templates for
those are not yet available--"by release" is the only statement I've seen.
