Greetings --

You're trying to format the drive from within WinXP. You can't.
This would be the computer equivalent of sawing off the tree limb
you're sitting on.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

in at the newsgroups for a response...

Do you have XP installed on C:? You cannot boot from the drive that you
intend to format. It will fail. Instead, boot with the XP CD. Then run
the disk commands on C:

Makes sense, Bruce. Let me ask another easy one:
I have a slave hard drive that I'd like to format
while my Master XP is running. How do I do that?

Right click My Computer, choose Manage, under storage click on Disk
Management and you should see your slave drive, right click and you will see
your options.

Okay, I saw my slave drive. I right clicked on
it. I didn't see any option that led me to
where I could format it......please lead me a bit further...

You have to create a partition first.

with a slave you can likely just format it from MY Computer. Right click the
slave drive and select "Format"

Not if it doesn't have a partition, which is what is answer of format not
being an option suggests.
