Russ & Tini:
Perhaps I can help by asking what I believe is a similar question. I
run Outlook 2002, Office XP, Win XP with US options. In an effort to
reduce the amount of stuff clogging RAM, I disabled SOMEWHERE (Sorry, I
forgot where) a part of Windows (I think!) that had to do with
telephony. I thought that this had to do with VoIP or computer-run
phone systems and that, therefore I didn't need it. That might be
true, but it also seems that immediately after that, Outlook lost the
ability to automatically format telephone numbers in the customary US
style that Tini seems to be asking about. Tini's problem could be the
same as mine, or the machine in question could be set up to format
numbers by some other customary geographic standard. If you could help
me, you might be able to help Tini too. Or this could get more inof
out of Tini.

All that is required for masking of phone numbers is to set your default
dialing location correctly for your operating system.

BTW, Russ, it turned out that my problem was caused by my fooling
around with msconfig. I had removed from RAM the telephony components
of Windows and of any other program that looked at the registry to
decide whether to load telephony-related components.

Did you ever hear from Tini whether you solved her problem ?

How often do you hear, generally ?

Unloading telephony components would certainly cause a problem with masking
of phone numbers.
How often do I hear if I've solved a problem?
Almost never.
How often do I hear if I haven't?
Almost always.
