How do you extract or reinstall a file you deleted from Xp , like msconfig,
from the install CD

thanks in advance.

put in XP-cd exit out if it starts up,
go to start
run type in cmd click OK
type in command prompt sfc /scannow
click enter key

leave it run till its done...Good luck.

Where x = your CD Drive and y = your Hard Drive.
Have your Windows XP CD in Drive x.

Start | Run | Type: cmd | OK
Type (Or copy and Paste):

expand x:\i386\MSCONFIG.EX_ y:\Windows\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\msconfig.exe

Hit ENTER
This should expand msconfig.exe from drive x to drive y.

"sfc/scamnow" won't do anything. But, it's hysterical nevertheless - the
/scamnow switch is priceless, utterly priceless.

sfc /scannow works wonders, though.

It will scan all the "important" files that make Windows XP the happy, shiny OS
that it is; it will replace those those that are corrupt or otherwise don't meet
with its approval with versions from the original Windows XP installation CD
that you supply.

Batteries not included, void where prohibited, tax and tag not included.

| What does the sfc/scamnow command actually do?? Would appreciate an
| explanation.

Thanks for you reply and humor, sorry about the spelling error. I looked up
sfc/scannow in Help and Support and it explained about the command, and
indicated that it would look in the
%systemroot%\system32\dllcache folder for the files that were missing. My
question is if the file was deleted, it won't be there and won't be found.
Nothing was said in the explanation of the command about it searching the
install CD. But you are saying it will? Why is this not explained in the
help file?

Thanks again for the info
