Vanessa

I just got Windows XP and literally as soon as I turn the
comp on and connected the internet, I started getting very
offensive pop-ups. This was before I even started the
brower. I decided that they must be coming from Windows
Messenger, so I got rid of it. The offensive pop-ups
stopped coming, but I'm still getting other pop-ups, stuff
about updates, and spyware, and things like that. Most of
them say either "You can get rid of these pop-ups by going
to such and such a website and buying their pop-up
blocking service" or they say "You can get rid of these
pop-ups by turning of Windows Alert" or something like
that. So how would I go about doing this? Thanks!

Hi Vanessa,

There can be a number of reasons why these pop-ups are appearing on your desktop. To start off with, you may visit
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download and install all the critical updates. You may also want to download and
install a decent anti-spyware software like Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com) Make sure that you are running a
Anti-Virus software and more importantly, it is regularly updated.

You can also order a free Windows XP SP2 CD from:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx
