Hello all

added a network card (dlink) to my machine (I need it for my dual boot, not
xp) and my internet surfing has gone. I can connect ok (speedtouch 330
adsl) but can't surf or get my mail. I'm sure it's down to my new card,
but when I delete it and reboot it installs it'self again. What can I do
to stop it self installing?? I've tried disableing the card, but it seems
to have no difference to my internet stuff.

cheers,

Ross

try removing the card physically from your system first

if no internet connectivity after this your issue is your network settings
also some cards from different manufacturers use the same chips as from others and your dlink may be the same chip as the other nic. this can cause all kinds of hassles in a system (two nics, same chip). and in some cases you won't notice a thing as it will work great

back to your particular problem....
to keep it from installing a driver remove the driver, then tell install to use the driver for unknown / unsupported hardware. this at least places a driver in there that won't function or cause havoc with the card itself

also check the irq assignments. if your nics are on the same irq you've got to physically move the newer one to a new pci slot to try to get it on a different irq. if out of irq's disable the ones you aren't using in the bios such as serial ports, possibly the floppy interface (if no floppy) etc.....
