I recently ran into some problems with my xp that require
me to reformat I think at this point. So I am trying to
just copy the files that I need off the hdd. I put the hdd
into another computer and browse it through xp...
everytime I try to copy the files onto the current xp
install, c:, it will tell me that access is restricted or
something to that nature. I think the reason being because
I had a password on my user acct on that hdd.

Is there any way to get around this so that I can get the
files that I need?

This article describes how to take ownership of a file or folder
to which you have been denied access:

Thank you for replying Carey. I don't have access to my
computer right now so I will try this when I get home. One
question I have for you though is whether or not this will
work in my case since the drive I need to copy files from
has it's own xp installation....so when I go to take
ownership of the folder I need to copy since it is on
another drive does that matter at all?

I tried this but when I right click any folder there is no
such "security" tab. I even tried this on the xp acct I am
already logged onto as the admin and there is no security
tab. Am I doing something wrong?

Tanner;
Are you using NTFS file system...you must be.
Windows XP Home or Pro?
Home...must be in Safe Mode.
Pro...must disable Simple File Sharing

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it so much... I got the
files I needed and now I am reformat :).
