I produce a word document that I want to use as my desktop background. How do
I convert it to jpeg or other photo format.

Download the trial version of SnagIt and capture the document to a file
format of your choice. Note that as screens are usually landscape mode and
documents usually portrait mode there is plenty of scope for distortion when
you create background, unless you match the aspect ratios. Be warned, SnagIt
is so useful that you may want to buy it ;)

If you want to capture an entire one-page document in Word, the easiest way
is to choose SnagIt as your printer and "print" to it. This creates a
high-fidelity capture that you can then save in the graphics format of your
choice.

I Copy from Publisher, Past As New into PhotoImpact,, and then Save As. I
suppose it would work the same way from Word to any photo processing program.
