How do you access floppies?

I can no longer access floppy disks, although Windows says my "floppy
controller" is working properly. This is new following a computer crash,
which event either caused the computer to lose this functionality or caused
me to lose my functionality in executing it.

I consulted a book to refresh my memory, and it indicates the floppy appears
as Disk A, when you click on the computer icon. My list now starts with C,
the computer itself, and continues to D and E, which are CD/DVD related. I
know that in Windows, unlike the Mac, you navigate to a floppy to access it,
but navigate to where?

Start Windows Explorer and the floppy should be shown under My Computer,
depending on the layout you might have to click on a + sign to expand the
list. From your description it is unlikely it will be there since it is not
showing by clicking My Computer.

You can go to the My Computer Properties Hardwaretab Device Manager and try
re-installing the driver. Also try disabling and re-enabling. Could be the
drive just died and will have to be replaced.

If the A: drive is not listed under "my computer" then I rather suspect it is not selected in your BIOS. This is not a simple fix I'm afraid and entails things that may be above your experiance. One simple test you can perhaps perform yourself is unplug your machine and then open the tower up and unplug the cable leading to your floppy drive. Leave the case open and carefully plug the system back in. Now boot up and let it get to your desktop and then leave it for a minute or two. Now shut the system down and unplug it again. Now plug the floppy drive back in and close your case up. Now plug the system back in and reboot. See if your system recognizes the floppy and installs the proper drivers for it. e:mail me if you need more help. good luck.
 
I just tracked back to this, since I had resolved the problem. I'm
embarassed to say that the problem was resolved by rebooting the system.
Anyone reading this had the right to assume that I had already taken such
basic measures. I try not to panic before I try a few simple things, but I
probably should commit some kind of check list to writing. In any event,
thank you for the information.
