Problem:

When I turn on the computer I get a Fat32 message and am
given a option to press any key to skip a disk check.

Since installing a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard the
computer automatically cancels the disk check- as if I
had hit a key which would do the same.

Question:

Is there a way to manually launch the Check Disk Utility
once my computer has launched Windows XP (home edition)?

Go to Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter. In the Command
Prompt window type: CHKDSK /F , and hit enter, answer "yes" and
reboot your computer.
