how do u format xp?

my comp is really running slow is there anyway to format
it? because i get some message saying "format can not run
because the volume is in use by another process. format
may run if the volume is dismounted first. all opened
handles to this volume will be invalid." i hit yes but it
doesnt format or anything. anyone know what im talking
about?

It is not possible to format the System volume from within Windows. I don't
even think it was possible with Windows 3.1, and as far as I remember has
never been possible in any other version of Windows.

Example: you right-click on your system volume while within My Computer and
choose 'format' as an option. This is an illegal operation, and will not be
carried out. And thank goodness. It keeps tens of thousands of nubies from
destroying their Windows installations.

To format drive C: and reinstall XP, boot using the XP install cd and use
the tools provided there to format C:
