How do "pop ups" work?

I keep getting a window come up that says "Messenger Service ......go to
www.endads.com and buy some software to stop this window from coming
up......" McAfee detects the outbound communication but does not prevent
this window displaying. It looks to me that it is being generated from
svchost.exe. Sometimes the URL changes to www.saveprivacy.com
www.byebyeads.com and the like.

How is this being triggered on my PC?
How do I stop this?
How do I find out who is responsible? :-)

Many thanks,
Ross.

Have a look in ALT.PRIVACY.SPYWARE under 28 June 2003 " Messenger
Service". I was also getting exactly as you are - I take it that you are
using WIN.XP - and have now disabled Messenger Service. To date, it has
worked !

With the messenger service on Win2000 or WinXP. It's the kind of
messages you can send in your local (or not so local said:

By switching off that messenger service. Careful: this isn't related
to the MSN Messenger.

Go to Start/Run, type services.msc and hit Enter.

You'll see a list of services running on your PC. Right click on the
Messenger Service, select Properties and change the startup type to
"Deactivated" (or similar). This means it won't be started next time
you boot up your system. If you want to shutdown that service
immediately, click on "stop" or something like this (I'm not working
on an English Windows user interface, so I'm not sure what's written
on the buttons and menues.)

This works, but blocking the offending incoming ports (as well, or
instead) is also a good plan. At the very least check what other ports
may be visible to the outside world - if they can access the ones
messenger is listening on, there's a non-negligible chance that they can
also access some others with rather more potential impact.
