How do make lists align on the period?

Word 2003: When learning to type, I was taught to offset mumbered lists and
outlines so that the periods remained aligned rregardless of the number of
chacters. In a list of 15, numbers 1 -9 would be one space in from the
margin. Can you teach Word to do this rather than the truly tacky default
that just shoves everything to the right?

When using tabs, you can use a decimal tab. When using auto numbering, you
can set the number alignment as right rather than left.
