I have a .pst file that has some search folders defined in it that I
want to use.. how do I import them into my new current .pst I'm using??

Yep.. and then? The thing is, I installed Outlook on a fresh machine..
and did File->Import to import all my backed up mail. This is the
cleanest way to restore after a reformat.. otherwise you get broken
contacts. Anyway.. the search folders did not import. How do I move
the search folders from my old .pst to my new one?

No it's not - it's the fastest way to corrupt data.

first move the pst to the machine you want the search folders on, then open
it using file, open... Reusing existing psts is the best way to avoid
problems and you can set it as the default message store if desired.

By doing what Vijay said.
wht do u mean, i never suggested so chk the post n tell whts wrong to
open the outlook data file there???!!!

Eh? You suggested to the OP that he did File-Open-Outlook data File. I
was telling the OP to do what you said!

Yes.. that's what I'm not sure how to do. How do I open a PST and set
it as my default message store??

Gordon, is this the preferred method of restoring Outlook data after a
reformat & reinstall of Office?

File>Open>Outlook Data File. Browse to the PST, select it, and click OK.
This opens the PST.

Click Tools>E-mail Accounts>Next. At the bottom left there's a drop-down
labeled "Deliver new e-mail to the following location". Use it to choose
the PST you just opened. Click Finish, then stop and restart Outlook. The
PST you opened will be your delivery location. If you have any data in the
PST you had, you can open those folders and drag-and-drop the data in them
to the corresponding folders in the current default folder file or you can
simply reference it from where it is. If you move the data in the prior PST
or if you don't wish to reference it any more, you can close that PST with
right-click>Close to remove it from the folder list.

Great, thanks! What about getting Outlook to ignore the 'Contacts' in
the brand new empty Outlook.pst and have it only use the one from my
backup instead?

You can tell Outlook which Contacts folder to examine first. Open the
Address Book and click Tools>Options. Make the adjustment there. This
assumes, though, that you've enabled the Contacts folder as an address book
on the Outlook Address Book tab of its properties.
