on my desktop, Window XP Home, get back to default lettering with no
background color just below each icon?

It helped partially. I have the white lettering now below each icon. However,
I like to use the AZUL pattern on the desktop and when I applied that all the
white lettering has a blue background. I used to have no background coloring,
just the lettering. I also have a white blank square in the lower right
quadrant of the the desktop screen because of something I did online
yesterday. From online I tried to put something on my desktop. Now, while
offline, this white blank, which was a photo, is just sitting there. Please
help.

Open System Properties in Control Panel, choose the Advanced tab, and click
Settings in the Performance section. On the Visual Effects tab select
custom, uncheck show shadows under menus and click Ok.

Right click an open spot on your Desktop and select Properties from the menu.
Note: You can also launch Display Properties from Control Panel.
In Display Properties, click on the Desktop tab.
On the Desktop page, hit the Customize Desktop button.
In Desktop Items, click on the Web tab.
In the Web pages box, uncheck any items listed that may be checked.
Also, uncheck Lock desktop items if it's checked.
Click OK twice.

You may have to restart your computer after making these changes.

If that doesn't help see this post by Ken Blake, MS-MVP for other options to
check.
