How Do I ?

The first thing you do is spend the next year or more learning JavaScript
which runs in the browser. When written correctly, product configuration
tools usually run in the browser to minimize trips back and forth to the web
server. When costs and prices are involved the data is then usually sent to
the server so the merchant can hide his costs and profit margins from being
read by the prying eyes of competitors. Learning server-side coding will
take a year or so too noting I am 'estimating' the time it may require you
to learn to code good enough to build a product configuration and cost
estimating application like the sample you referred to.

Hi Chris,

You can't tell what an iceberg is by looking at the part that sticks out of
the water.

A figure skater spends decades making it look easy.

Similarly, as a self-confessed "newbie," you are looking at a user interface
for a program, and want to know how you can make one "like this guy has on
his website." The answer is, it is going to take a good while to learn to
program. I would encourage you to learn to program, if you think you would
enjoy doing it. On the other hand, if you want to sell auto parts, and
simply "have" a program, it would be best to either find one ready-made
(Google would be a start) or hire a professional.

Kevin, I love your analogies...do they call you the analogy-dood? :-)

Thanks Rob. No, I'm afraid that's just how I think.

This is a pretty common interface for computer stores.
Exactly how would it be used for auto parts sales?
That is the first question you REALLY need to answer for yourself.
You need to know the answer to that so you will not waste time developing
something that does not fit your business model.
You also need to be REALLY sure as to what your goal for this site is.
THEN....
either take this plan and get the education you need to do it on your own or
take the plan to a web professional.

And has already been suggested to you.......plan on it taking some time and
effort. If that is what you really want.... then go for it and have fun.

Best to you........
