How do I watch movies from my CD-ROM and hard disk drives?

My PC's system is a Window XP HOme Edition. How do I
watch movies from my CD-ROM and hard disk drives? I have
tried using Window Media Players but without success.
Please advise.

What type of movies are you trying to watch.. .avi,mpg2,mov or what. Most
full length high quality video don't fit on CD rom.
