I currently run with an English OS with Windows XP SP2. When I view
Japanese websites or try to download programs from their sites, almost all
the information turns to funny characters............. can anyone explain
this to me in plain non-techinical terms? Also, what do I have to do the
above? Thank you for any input.

What are you calling "funny characters"? Would the happen to be one of
the Japanese Alphabets? Did you download and install the Japanese Text
Display components for your browser?

Thanks for the replys.

When in a Japanese site, the screen does show the Japanese characters but
not all of them. For the unrecognizable ones, they are mostly symbols like
%?@#^*, of sorts....... Also if I try to go into any links, then most of the
characters turn to symbols but I am still able to view pictures and the
general layout of the site. Currently my settings from before were already
at:

Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Languages,
Supplemental Language Support > Install files for East Asian
Languages.

I am able to type and read texts just not view the entire contents of some
sites.....
I am thinking if I have to purchase a program or something....?
Would it be because I run with an English OS?

I have tried looking at previous discussions about language settings but
couldn't find anything similar...............just mostly questions about
changing the language of the OS.

Cheers

Your browser has to have the proper text display component installed.
What browser are you using? For IE the "Install on Demand" on demand
option should be enabled. You have to have the Japanese Language Pack
installed. You might want to ask about this in one of the Internet
Explorer newsgroups.

I took a look at that and downloaded the "Office XP Tool: Japanese Language
Pack" . It then directed me to download the"Global IME (Japanese)" but then
states

**IMPORTANT This download is the Microsoft Office version of the Global IME
(Japanese) IME. Microsoft Windows® also contains a version of this IME. If
you are running Microsoft Windows® 2000, Microsoft Windows® XP, or Microsoft
Windows® Server 2003, you do not need to download the Global IME (Japanese).
We recommend that you use the Windows version of this IME instead.***

I am on Windows XP so now it is recommending me to use the window's version
of the IME........!!?? (Which I am using already)

Well it might be easier if I put an example of a site that appears all funky
on my screen. http://www.nsk-japan.com/

I can read the characters in the light green areas alright but the stuff
underneath is all "¡‹³ˆõÂÌ—pŽŽŒ±‚ÌÂî•ñ‚Æ‘ÎÂ".

??

Much appreciate the efforts to help.

Don't install the Global IME pack on your XP computer, it's not meant
for your Operating System.

I just went to the web site link you supplied with IE v 6.0.2800.1106 on
Windows 2000. The characters were not correct so I clicked on IE "View"
menu and selected Encoding Auto select or the more option, I forget.
Anyway, IE told me it needed to install the Japanese language pack and I
told it to do so. It went through the motions, asked me for my old
Windows 2000 (SP2) cd and proceeded to install. I kept my finger
crossed thinking that I might regret the move but it installed the
Japanese fonts and I can see the page as it should be... although I
can't read Japanese.

I tried it with my Mozilla (preferred browser) before I did it with IE
but as you describe the fonts were not correct and I couldn't install
the fonts from Mozilla. That is when I thought I would try it with IE.
After doing the font installation from IE, Mozilla sees the characters
properly. So, use IE and check/select the character encoding in the
"View" menu and try to install the fonts from there. Worked for me on
Windows 2000 so it should work for you on XP.

These characters are copied from the web site in question: 挊嶌尃朄å±æŽ•
傔傜傟å°å„傞応崌傪å½å’丄æ®å„乕僕åºæ®åµ¹ä¸’堷梡丒暋惢傪嬛巭åŸå‚‘å¡ä¸…

Although, if you don't have the Japanese language pack you might not see
them properly anyway, I'm posting them for my own curiosity. I'm
heading back to my NT 4 box now, I want to see if it can see them in the
post from there.

Whoooooo!!!!! It works!!!! Thanks man. It only took a few clicks after
following your directions. You would not believe how many hours of going
though the help menus and stuff to no avail before I asked somebody.

Hats off to you. Cheers for all your help.
