Ok Ramesh. Here is a (long) summary of the problem. I did a manual
TrendMicro Internet Security virus file update on my laptop, and I think that
mistakenly install the wrong program. I have done it hundreds of times, but I
must have been sleepy. Anyway, the component that I tied to install somehow
tried to initiate a reinstall of XP. Or, at lease it tried to reinstall the
files in the systen32 directory. How do I know this? I went through the
Dr.Watson and Event Viewer Logs, and used Windows debugging Tool to look at
the crash dump file (this one didn’t help much because I really didn’t know
what to look for).
It looks like XP shut down the attempted reinstall of the system32 folder
and replaced the files with the backup versions. I actually have results from
the Dr Watson logs, etc. posted in this newsgroup. If you are interested,
look up the posts under my name or specifically my post entitled “Crash! Help
with Dr. Watson and Event Viewer Log Interpretation†Actually; I am wondering
if it might be better for you to respond to that post instead.
Anyway, after this abortive reinstall, the machine did not crash
immediately. I actually used it a few hours after without any problems. It
was only on boot-up the next day that I got the BSOD and “Stop c000021a
{Fatal System Error}â€. I can’t do a system restore or last known good config.
It just dies at the agp440 driver load. If I delete that file, it dies at the
next one. My research at the MS KB has leaded me to believe that I have a
corrupt registry caused by the Trend Micro application
I was able to pull the hard drive out and load it into my desktop and
retrieve my data. However, there are a few valuable programs that I would
desperately like to save, so wiping the drive is a last resort. But, I
believe that this is salvageable. That why I’m being so painstaking. I have
already downloaded some stuff from Bart’s PE. However, I wanted to give the
standard Windows Recover Disk a try first. However, I have to build that CD
from scratch, because these OEM computers do not have the original version of
XP. I figure if I could import and edit the registry, that might even be
faster in getting me to the point where I can do a system restore. Let me

Yes. You may edit the registry offline using Bart PE boot cd, as mentioned in one of the links I posted earlier.

I am going to jump in on this post because it kinda relates to some questions
that I have. You see, one of my Xp machines has crashed and I get the BSOD
when I try to start up. I narrowed the problem down to a currupt registry,
and I know the offending program. I think that if I am able to disable this
registry key, I will solve the problem.
I have access to the "bad" drive by hooking it up to another machine that I
have. Can I edit the registry of the affected machine via the good machine
using the methods discussed here?

Having significant boot issues with the original installation.
(I had added a new vid card,...)
So, I installed XP to another folder. And all appears well.
I now want to edit the registry of the original installation to disable
various startup items.
How do I use regedit/ msconfig to open the orig install registry?
