Win XP will not recognize a CDRW as a viable backup destination. How can I make Quicken 2003 backup to CDRW in XP?

Your cdrw needs to be formatted. But I think the good old floppy is still
more dependable backing up Quicken. Jym

An ordinary format is no good. It would have to be formatted using
Roxio Direct CD packet writing software or the equivalent Nero packet
writing software (inCD I think): The Windows XP burning program will
not write directly to CD, formatted or not.

You can backup the Quicken files to HDD and then use the XP burning
software to copy these files to CD - but that finalises the CD and you
end up with a CD with only a couple of megs on it, and unable to write
anymore to it! Not very efficient - floppy or HDD is much better!

If you want it on CD, it is much better to use a Direct CD or Nero
formatted CD - it can either be CDRW or even just CDR. You can keep
writing backups to it, but will need to rename earlier backups before
you do, if you want to keep them all.

Window XP does not format , so what you mean by "ordinary format" is a
mystery to me . Some people get formating and erasing mixed up .There are a
variety of third party cd writing software that will format , ( not only
Roxio or Nero ) . Jym

All CDR or RW have to be formatted to be written to - that's a low
level format that normally these days is already done on blank CD's
when you buy them. Nothing to do with erasing.

But XP will not write directly to a CDR/RW whether or not it has the
low level format. It will only write directly if the CD has been
formatted with DirectCD or equivalent packet writing software from
other manufacturers that makes the CDR/RW look just like a big floppy
or removable HDD.

Check Intuit's website for support. Depending on your version of Quicken (if using XP), the backup supposedly writes to a temp folder in Docs and Settings, from which you have to "accept" the download to CD. I have yet to find the folder Intuit names, but that's their answer. I've resorted to using the Quicken backup function (which in my case does nothing), then just copying to the CD. It's a pain, but I haven't found a better solution.
