how do i use outlook for my sole home email account?

Assuming you've installed Outlook, you must create a profile for it to use.
Use the mail applet in the control panel to do this.

You must also have an ISP that connects you to the internet and an email
account.

Set up the email account as per the instructions you'll find on your ISP's
website.

Once you're connected to the internet, you should be able to open Outlook to
send and receive emails.

And just to add to Kathleen's excellent advice you should also go to IE\Properties\Programs and under the E-mail box select Outlook as the client so it will be made the Default email client.
