How do I use Contacts as Address Book?

In Outlook 2003, how do I use Contacts as my address book when sending emails?

try this:

right click the Contacts folder | Properties | Outlook address book | tick
the box to show as an address book.

Hi Judy,
I have done as you suggested without any luck.
There is over 100 entries in the Contacts but nothing shows up in the email
address book.

Ensure your Outlook Address Book service is properly installed.
Tools->Options->Mail Setup->Accounts->Directories=>View or Change->ensure
the address book service is installed. If not, back up one step and add
it. Be sure to close and restart Outlook when prompted.

Milly,
When I get to the "ensure the address book service is installed", I am asked
for server name. Is this the correct path, if so, where do I find the server
name to enter?

That doesn't sound like you selected the "Add a new directory or address
book" radio button before clicking Next.

Brian, you have totally lost me.

From Milly's instructions.
Tools > Options > Mail setup > Accounts > Directory > View or Change > opens
email accounts, so what is ment by "ensure the address book service is
installed?"
Or
Tools > Options > Mail Setup > Accounts > Directory> (as you wrote) Add a
New Directory or Address Book > Directory or Address Book Type > Internet
Directory Service (LDAP what ever that means) > Service Information...... I
again ask, is this the correct path? If so, where do I find the server
information to enter?

Tools>Options>Mail Setup>E-mail Accounts>View or change existing directories
or address books>Next or. just a little more simply, Tools>E-mail
Accounts>View or change existing directories or address books>Next is the
path you should take. If the Outlook Address Book service is not in your
mail profile, click Add, select the Additional Address Books radio button,
click Next, select Outlook Address Book, click Next, then Finish. Stop and
restart Outlook. Then right-click your Contacts folder, choose Properties,
select the Outlook Address Book tab, and make sure the box labeled "Show
this folder as an e-mail Address Book" is checked.

O/K, I was able to follow the last communication.
Outlook Address Book was already in the mail profile.
After right-clicking on Contacts Folder etc. "Show this folder as an e-mail
Address Book" was already checked.

When I go to send an e-mail or click on the address book icon in the
Navigation Bar (in Outlook 2003) an empty address book opens.
In the "Show names from the:" area in the address book, there are five
options, all of which are empty.

Click Tools>E-mail Accounts>View or change existing directories or address
books>Next. Select the Outlook Address Book and click Change. Remove the
bogus folders there.
 
I have removed the "bogus" folders from Outlook Address Book.
I now right click on Contacts folder > Properties > Outlook Address Book >
"Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book" is greyed out and will not
accept a check.

Then you need to completely remove the Outlook Address Book service from the
mail profile, stop and restart Outlook, and add it back in.

You have been in the mail profile several times now and have seen where the
Outlook Address Book service is defined. Surely you're able to visit it
once again and look at the buttons you see while you're there, since you
haven't looked at them the other times. Here it is one more time in lurid
detail.

Click Tools>E-mail Accounts>View or change existing directories or address
books>Next. Select the Outlook Address Book and click Remove. Click
Finish. Stop and restart Outlook

Click Tools>E-mail Accounts>Add a new directory or address book>Next.
Select Additional Address Books. Click Next. Select Outlook Address Book,
click Next, then Finish. Stop and restart Outlook. Now you should be able
to click the "Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book" check box on the
Contacts folder properties pages.
 
I have followed through and set everything as you have said. "Show this
folder as an e-mail Address Book" is checked.
I can go to Mail > Click on Address Book in the task bar and a blank Address
Book opens, the original problem seven days ago.
I have closed Outlook down, I have closed the computer down, restarted both
-- no change.

As I cannot see your computer, I'm afraid the only suggestion I have left it
to start afresh with a new mail profile, adding in your existing PST and
redefiniing your accounts. This will allow you start completely from
scratch with the services in the profile. Beyond that, I can't suggest
anything else.
 
In the Address Book, what entries do you see in the Show Names From list.
