Hi guys

I have just been given a very old pc which ran windows 95. A friend has now installed 98 (second edition) and I have just bought a hp deskjet 3550. It will not load due to the memory being only 48.0MB and the processor level needs upgrading. I currently have a GenuineInel Pentium(r) Processor 48.0MB RAM. I have no idea what this means as this is the first time I have ever had a computer and need instructions for a two year old!!

I have been told I need to upgrade processor to at least level 6 (if that makes sense) and upgrade RAM to at least 64MB

Could somebody please tell me how to do this, where I get this from and the cheapest way possible in the simplest terms

I would be forever greatful

Tanya

Go to www.belarc.com and get a copy of The Belarc Advisor. Install and run
it.

It will tell you what kind of CPU you have, how much memory, kind of video
card, etc.

With that info you can then tell us what kind of CPU you really have, etc.

Tanya;
You will probably never get windows XP on that computer and if you did
it would have very poor performance.
I would suggest you take the computer to a local professional or a
knowledgeable friend.

Hi Tanya,

I'm afraid the PC would not be worth upgrading. It would cost more to
upgrade than a new one would cost. My suggestion is, just use the computer
as is. As you go, learn more about PC's and decide what you want in one.
When you feel the time is right, get yourself a new, up to date, PC.

Best to you, JAX

Instead of upgrading the computer to work with that printer, you're better
off finding a used printer that will work with the computer.

You could probably add slightly more memory, but upgrading the processor is
going to be somewhere between very difficult and impossible.

I'd suggest not bothering with trying to upgrade. If it works now, use it
as-is, and when you have a better idea what you use the computer for, you
can buy a new (or newer) computer that will do what you need.

Here's a hint: I just scrapped about a half-dozen computers of that vintage
and gave them to a company that's going to use the parts in a bar top.
That's about all that computer is worth.
