how do I "unlock fileds" so I can merge to new document?

When I attempt to do a mail merge to a new Word document, I get a message
that states, "Word found locked fields during update, Word cannot update
locked fields." I select "ok" and the message repeats five or six times,
before the document merges anyway. It's a frustrating waste of time that
never happened with Word 2003.

This has nothing to do with your Word version. Fields which are locked
are not updated automatically while unlocked fields are when you print
preview them and stuff like that. You trying to do a merge results in
Word displaying a warning.

To unlock a field, select it and press CTRL+SHIFT+F11.
