Hello all,

Using IE 6 & Win XP (SP's unknown--possible SP's & updates are current)

How do I uninstall & then reinstall IE 6? IE DOESN'T SHOW UP IN Add/Remove
Programs.

My wife's neice (in Austin, TX) has a computer that IE 6 is not working.
Everytime she goes to open it up, she gets an hourglass, like it is trying
to do something. Then the hourglass goes away and nothing.

This computer is an E-Machine that they bought from a pawn shop, so she
doesn't have any of the original disks, plus the computer probably has all
kinds of problems.

When we were there a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that she was getting
alot of pop-ups. So I downloaded Ad-Aware (or is it Ad-Ware?) and SpyBot
S&D. I scanned her system with Ad-Aware and removed everything it found and
then gave her a brief run-down on how to use the programs. Then we left
that day to head home.

Things were working fine for a few days, then she tried to run SpyBot S&D
and something happened...whether it was caused by SpyBot, Windows Update, or
something else, I'm not sure... but now IE won't open.

System restore is not turned on so we can't try that. Although, doesn't
SpyBot S&D create a restore point every time it is run? If we turn on
System Restore, will those restore points be visible and will we be able to
restore to those points even though System Restore was not on when it
created those restore points? But she says that she can't even get SpyBot
to open up correctly.

We are in Phoenix, AZ, so I'm trying to help her over the phone. And it is
very difficult because she is not computer savvy. I haven't looked into
having her set up Remote Assistance or Remote Desktop yet, don't know if
that will even work.

Doesn't IE have some sort of install/set up file that we can use to
reinstall it?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide,

Conan Kelly

It seldom corrects problems like this, but here is the article:
How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378

Only a format & reinstall of Windows will resolve the problem. Reinstalling
IE won't; installing IE7 won't.

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
