How do I un-set read only for all files and folders?

Deborah

Every time I click on Properties for a folder or file, it
shows the Read Only box in green (I'm assuning this means
it's enabled). I uncheck the box, and apply to all files
and subfolders, but it's still checked when I click on
Propperties again. I cannot seem to clear the read only
attributes for anything.

I try to save files on a CD-RW, and when I try to save
changes to the file, it says that access is denied, it's
read only.

I'm working in Windows XP.

Thank you!

The green box does not signify read only. Its presences means that "read
only" or other restrictions (permissions) may be in force on the items
contained within the folder.

There are times when a folder is marked read only in Windows: system
protected folders or customized folders are read only. However a read only
in a folder's properties is only used by the operating programs. All other
programs should disregard it.

For your problem, what program are you using to burn the CDRW? You need to
use packet writing software to update files on the fly. The built in XP
burning functions are not capable of this.

It's really not set to read only - notice that it is a box and not a check.

Thank you, I guess I'm not going insane then, just feel
like it. I bought a new computer a few weeks ago. The CD
burner came bundled with Nero Burner 5. It had limited
functions, so I downloaded a demo version for Nero 6
Ultra Suite. I can't find anything to 'update files on
the fly' in that either, and help files are unavailable
with the demo version it would seem.

I found that WIndows XP is using Roxio for burning
through Windows Exporder, and read many complaints about
Roxio over the net. It's already cannibalised one of my
CD-RW disks.

Thank you. It appeared to be set as read only to me, as
the box was colored green, and when I clicked on it, it
cleared the color. I'm so unfamiliar with everything in
Windows XP. I'd been using Windows 98 prior to that.
Everything on the CD-RW is set as read only, which is
nearly making me rip my hair out, trying to find a work-
around.

Drives that come with Nero usually come with InCD. InCD is the one for treating CD-R/W as floppies.

They'll always be read only. It's a CD and you are using the inbuilt burner or Nero. They can erase a whole disk but not individual files.
