Hi,

Does anyone know how to completely turn off / disable / stop / cut off /
blow up / destroy this damned security manager that Microsoft installed on my
system during the XP SP2 update that has totally screwed up all my computer
settings????

First, my chat client used to be able to go right to my inbox for Hotmail,
now I have to login every time I go to mail, PAIN! Nobody but me has access
to this computer, I don't need login security to get in my email.

Second, I turn off the firewall because I already have 2 firewalls (one
hardware and one software) so I don't need theirs. As soon as I turn it off,
now I have this stupid red shield next to my clock that I don't want there.

Third, I am not Joe Stupid computer user, this crappy thing should allow me
the option to configure all my settings.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

If you go to Control Panel and click on the Windows shield, you will notice
that there is a facility to change the way that it alerts you.. try clicking
on this function and see what it does..

Q. "I am not Joe Stupid computer user, this crappy thing should allow me
the option to configure all my settings."

A. Start > Settings > Control Panel > Security Center
and click on: "Change the way Security Center alerts me"
and make your desired alert changes.

If you manually make changes in the way the Security
Center alerts you, the icon will not appear. This is by design.

OK Carey - can you answer this?

I am running ZoneAlarm 5.1 and Norton AntiVirus 2004. I have changed the
alert to not monitor the firewall or antivirus software and have turned off
the alerts for notifying me. When I reboot the computer the security center
alerts me that I don't have a firewall - antivirus is OK (not monitored).
Why? How do I fix it?

Thanks,
Steve

Hi

Many have reported this problem in the newsgroups, it looks like
a bug in SP2.

If the "Change the Way Security Center Notifies Me" doesn't stick
when you reboot, or you want to disable the Security Center totally
anyway, you can do the following:

Start/Run --> services.msc

Find "Security Center" in the list, double click on it, set
"Startup type" to Disabled.

Perhaps not Joe Stupid, but how about Joe Lazy? Did you try to do any
research yourself?

Hi -
I went to "Change the way Security Center alerts me", made my changes, but
they didn't hold - i still get the security alert over and over. All the
boxes in that area are unchecked, and i did check the box in the virus
protection recommendations area (to indicate that i have an anti-virus
program that i will monitor). Is there something else i can do? it's very
annoying. Jody McClain

Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc , and hit enter.
Scroll down to " Security Center", right-click on this service
and select Properties > Startup type > Disabled, then Stop
the service.

Disable the Security Center service (Run>services.msc).

Hi Carey -
It worked for 1 day, now it has come back, even though the service says it
is disabled and stopped. I even went to the security settings in the control
panel to see what they looked like, and that option (change the way security
center alerts me) is not even available - any other ideas? Many thanks, Jody
McClain
