I am using Word 2003 and when I select a paragraph in my document and make
it bold it turns the whole document bold. I then have to press CTRL+Z to
reverse this last step and leave only the selected paragrpah bold.

How can I turn off this behaviour?

June,
Go to the styles and formatting task pane, click on the listarrow next to
your normal style , choose change, uncheck the auto update checkbox.
See if that helps.

From the FAQ:
30. I changed the formatting on one thing and now my whole document
has changed.
