how do I tabulate written information in excel?

I am trying to make a table compiled of written information in sections. How
do I create a defined section with a thickish line running vertically?

Don't know what a "defined section" is but for vertical lines check (a)
Format | Cells... | Border or (b) the Drawing toolbar's Line button.
If the toolbar is not visible, select View | Toolbars > Drawing
