Hello,

Whenever I type a few dashes, equals, hashes, etc, Word automatically
changes them into lines of various thicknesses and styles.

How can I stop it doing this ? I have tried changing the AutoFormat
option to replace symbol characters with symbols, but this doesn't make
any difference. Anyone any ideas ?

Also, once the lines are there, how do I delete them ? Pressing the
Delete or Backspace keys doesn't affect these lines at all.

Thanx for any help.

Hi Alan

In the Tools > AutoCorrect > AutoFormat As You Type dialog, instead of the
Symbols checkbox, clear the Borders checkbox. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/CantGetRidOfLine.htm, which also
describes how to remove the lines.

The Symbols one controls whether Word changes a pair of dashes between words
into an en dash or an em dash. That's something different that what you're
asking about.

Alan,

If you do get an autoformat line when you didn't want it, hit th
backspace key immediately, and it will turn back into the character
you typed.

If you got an autoformat line and didn't do the above and now want t
erase it, highlight the paragraph above the line and go to format
borders and shading, and click the box on the left that says "none."

I just had this problem myself, and found this solution at
