My W2K laptop home LAN conneced to WinME ICS desktop
constantly demands access to the web and I want it to
stop.

I have checked viruses, spyware, security, emptied start-
up folders, and reinstalled TCPIP and linksys drivers on
both systems. Another laptop on the home LAN to the
desktop doesn't cause the problem. The LAN and ICS
otherwise work perfectly.

I don't know what will show what is initiating the web
access, or what program to stop. Please help.

Regards,
Chrashing

In tcp/ip properties/advanced/dns, uncheck "register this connections
address". If that is enabled, it will keep trying to register with your ISP
dns server. Unless you use a packet sniffer on it, it will be difficult to
tell exactly what is going on. --- Steve

Well Steve, Luckily I caught your post before someone
deleted your post by mistake, I think.

Anyway unselecting that register connection box under DNS
didn't seem to help me. Thanks for the suggestion.

OK. Like I said, it would really take a packet sniffer of some sort. If you want to
try one, download a copy of Sygate personal firewall which is free. You could install
it and then disable the firewall itself which would leave it's excellent logging
capabilities still working or wait for it to alert you to an outbound attempt. You
should be able to find out where the traffic is going and on what ports. Windows
Update, antivirus software, chat programs that start automatically, and even media
players can also access the internet a lot without any user input. --- Steve
