How do I stop Outlook from downloading mail at startup?

For the last year I have been trying out Mozilla Thunderbird as my mail
program. I find it good but backing up, archiving and restoring mail &
addressbooks is challenging, so I've come back to MS. During the changeover,
I have mail on the server that I don't want downloaded yet. I want to (for
now) HAVE to manually click SEND/RECIEVE. How do I do this?

Also, remind me again how I import my old rules and whether I can somehow
import my Address books saved as LDIF files (from TB).

Thanks

Depends on your Outlook version, which you fail to mention.

Google will find the many references on how to import Thunderbird addresses
into Outlook.

Can anyone actually ANSWER my question? I'm working with Office 2003 and if I
could count on the accuracy of Googling, why would I come here? I was hoping
for a discussion, not a referral. Thank you very much.

Now that I know your Outlook version, I can tell you. Always include that
information when you post if you don't want people asking you for
clarification or referring you to other places. Vague quiestions or those
lacking information elicit vague answers.

Click Tools>Options>Mail Setup. Uncheck "Send immediately when connected".
Then click Send/Receive and uncheck the boxes labeled "Schedule an automatic
send/receive every". Click Close, then OK. You will now have to click
Send/Receive when you want to send or receive.

As to how to transfer Thunderbird data, either use Google Groups to search
the Outlook groups for any prior posts, or use Google to search the web for
yourself. For all you know, no one here has ever done what you want or the
process is too lengthy to type in, and that may be why all you'll get is
referrals. I certainly don't know (or care) how to make that transfer.
