MS outlook 2003 only sorts them by first name rather than having a column for
first name and one for last name. Not very good programming on MS's part.

You can sort by First name or File As name in the Outlook Address Book.
Check the properties of the service here: Tools menu > Accounts >
View/Change Existing address books > Click Next > Highlight Outlook Address
Book > Click Change

MS 2003 does not have an "accounts" option under "tools" but I did find
Email Accounts. I did change the sort sequence to "last, first" but MS
Outlook still sorts everything by first name.

How do I change the Global Address book as well? What steps need to be
taken to sort this by last name also?

Not sure about the GAL. Also, what's in the File As field in your contacts?

File as (Smith, John). It was first last until I changed it after your
last email to me. I appreciate your help on this. It is very difficult to
find business contact that I know by last name only.

But in all your contacts is the File As set to Last, First? That field can
have a multitude of values so it might be causing an issue.

I usually use "last name, first name" but sometimes I file by "company name"
then "last, first name."

I have MS OL 2003 11.8010.8028 SP2. Am I up-to-date? Is there a way for me
to send an attachement with my response to you so you can see what I am
talking about?

Thanks again for your help.

Problem is solved. Found out I needed to restart MS Outlook after chaging to
"file as Smith, John." Thanks for your help. :)

Hi guys,

I'm having the same problem but i want to sort "first name, last name".
I already selected my address book and marked "First Last" under show names
by.
I do not want to file as last name first name.
I have also restarted my outlook many many times.
In tools - options - preferences - contact options. I configured both
setting for first name, last name.. still always shows my contacts as "last
name, first name".
If i enter each contact and "file as" first name, last name than it works..
but i don't wanna do that to each and every contact .. tooo much work ..

Any ideas?

Your contention is that you have set your First and Last name fields
correctly for each contact, set your Outlook Address Book to sort by "First,
Last," restarted Outlook, and yet the Outlook Address Book view sorts by
Last, First? If so, then one of the conditions I specified has not been met.
