Hi - can anyone help!

I have a broadband connection and have a static public IP
that I want to use to host a web site. The PC will run in
the company which has a network, and connection to the web
via the braodband is via a firewall. I'm stuck on how to
setup the PC. Here's what I've done but I'm not sure what
wrong as it doesn't work!

The PC is setup with W2K Server, in a workgroup but hooked
up into CAT5/network - not sure if it should be part of
domain or not.

Network setting I have used are:-

IP: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Public/static IP give via broadband
S/Mask: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx As give by broadband company
D/Gateway: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx I've used IP of our firewall
DNS: I've used two supplier DNS servers

I have configured the firewall to all outbound access for
the IP address of the above computer. At present outbound
for all, but probably need to restrict this maybe for just
HTTP - 80 ?

Done all above and it doesn't work - if I ping an IP or
tracert just get nothing, and I really don't know how to
proceed, can anyone offer any assistance?

Thanks in advance.

Rod...

If the web site is to be public (anyone on net can access) and you have a
public IP address, it should work. However, you stated you have a firewall.
If the web site is behind the firewall and you want to use the public IP
address, put it in the DMZ, which basically means it's no longer behind the
firewall. If it's behind the firewall, it's on the private network and
that's not a good idea. However, you can open up port 80, only to the
private IP address of the web server and route the public address to the
private address. You need to set this for INBOUND connections, not
OUTBOUND.

The web server should be stand-alone and not part of a domain and IMHO, not
inside the private network. Generally two firewalls with a DMZ in the
middle is preferred with NEVER allowing a connection from inside the private
network to the web server. Remember, this is public. If you want it to be
private, then put it behind the firewall and restrict access from outside.

Normally, your public IP is the router and you use NAT for internal IP
translation. In your case you mention a firewall, which also gets
into the mix. Normally your broadband router is set to forward port
80 (the default HTTP port) on the external address to the same (or
different) port on an internal IP address, which is your web server.
