>>How do I setup Internal/External Connection<<

I have dialup right now with only my XP Pro connecting
to the internet. I have 3 other PCs (2 Win2k's & a 98)
along with the XP that makes up a LAN that I have setup
by way of a 5-port switch (physical). I'm not doing ICS.
The XP is the only one that touches the web.

In a couple of weeks I'll have DSL with the wireless
portal (as SBC calls it) that comes as part of their
package. Now I want to still have my PCs connected
internally as well as connect to the web. So once I get
my PCs setup to the web via the portal, what do I need to
do to set them up so that they'll still see each other as
they do now.

I ask because I don't know how it works where, you can
get machines to connect to the web AND an internal
network with the same NIC/ADAPTER while keeping them
totally seperate. How do I configure it so I have
169.254.x.x for my LAN and (with the same USB adapter)
get a public IP without screwing something up. Or does
it even work that way at all?? When you have dialup
it's simple, one modem - one NIC. This here is new
territory for me.

I have setup a number of DSL connections, but never had
to network PCs along with it.

Would somebody be so kind enuff to give me the knowledge
that I will need >>and/or a link<< to get this done
correctly?? I would definitely appreciate it. THANX N
ADVANCE.

Hello,

There are 2 answers to this. First it depends on the type of device that
your ISP is providing for you. If it is a Router that has several ports
for all of your wired clients as well as the wireless then there should be
very little for you to do. Just plug your clients into the router, make
sure the are set to "obtain and Ip address automatically" and it should
work.

A more likely senario is that all you will get is a DSL "modem". In your
case you may be able to connect a number of wireless clients to it but this
will be dependant on the hardware specifics. More typically this device
also has a physical connection to the phone line and has a RJ45 plug out.
For this I would suggest adding one of the several different home
firewall/routers out there on the market. Depending again on your DSL
connection, the router will be able to connect to the PPPoE connection
throught a configurable DSL client. It will also be able to give out IP
addresses as a DHCP server. You would just plug your clients into the
router, make sure the are set to "obtain and Ip address automatically" and
again it should work. Most of these personel routers also afford you a
very important feature, a Firewall.

Any one of these Home firewall/routers will include instructions on setting
them up.
