how do I setup an external monitor?

You'll have to check your notebook manual for specific details for your
particular make and model but in general, connect it to the monitor port on
the back of the notebook, then turn it on and then reboot the notebook.

Right click on the Desktop and select Properties... then select Advanced...
and you should now find you have two monitors listed (one being the notebook
one and the other being the external one)... you can choose to switch output
from one to the other, to clone the notebook (and therefore have the same on
both) or to extend the monitor (half on one screen, half on the other).

One step everybody overlooks it that your laptop has a display command that
is a 3-toggle command. My laptop is an Acer and the commnand ie FN+F5.
Toggled once and the display is on the laptop. Twice, it's on the remote.
Three times gives you both (identical screens). I didn't know this and tried
(in Display, settings) "Extend the Monitor". All I could get on the remote
screen was the wall paper from the desktop, not even the icons. Each laptop
uses its own Function command, but the principle is the same.
